Live Drawing

without comments

charcoal_figure01Last Thursday I attended a live drawing session.  For as much time as I’ve spent focused on the human form in art, I really haven’t had a lot of practice doing this.   It’s a really good exercise.  And maybe if I spend a little more time working at it, I’ll get better at it.  This one was my charcoal sketch, which was fun to play with and I think looked better than my pencil sketches, but I think that I may have gotten more out of my pencil sketches as an exercise.  Next time, I’m thinking of taking my Super Sculpey in and seeing how far I can get with a sculpture during the longer poses.  Having a live model there, affords the opportunity to even get up and walk around a bit, so it’s kind of perfect for that.  Then again, there’s a reason that this is such a time honored tradition, and maybe I should give myself a little more time working in pencil or getting more familiar with charcoal before I go and change the dynamic to 3D.

However I wind up working next time, I’m really happy to have found this place.  My coworker, Alex, told me about it.  With all our work being so digital day in and day out, it seems especially nice that she and I were able to steal away a few hours to sit and work from a model in traditional physical mediums.  No pixels, no lines of code, no software glitches, just making marks on paper.

Brewery Artwalk 2013

without comments

I’ve been pressed for time lately, but I wanted to show off this link to a Huffington Post bit calling the Brewery Artwalk the best art show in California with photos by Steve Payne (aka Paynie).

I miss participating in this artwalk.  They really were and continue to be fantastic.  If you’re in the LA area, it’s happening again this weekend.  Don’t miss it!

photo is from ’07 (the last one I participated in)

East Austin Studio Tour – One More Weekend!

without comments

So EAST had a lovely first weekend.  The event really is huge, and even though I’ve only seen a fraction of it, I feel like I’ve been able to see a lot of really cool art.  The Wherehouse, where I am showing, has been really great too.  I kept expecting things to be more difficult, but it just hasn’t been.  And not having been in Austin for so long, everyone’s work is so new to me, and I love seeing it and being able to share mine with my new community.  I think we have about 10 artists showing inside The Wherehouse, and a handful of others displaying (or performing or running classes) outside.

Do come out if you have the opportunity, 1023 Springdale Rd, Austin, TX 78721.

Buy a Wonderlounge pint glass and sample some tasty cider.  Stand on our soapbox and tell the world what you have to say.  Take in the paintings, and prints, and digital culture jamming art, and photographs.  Fire a crossbow out back, and get something embroidered on a shirt.  Maybe take a dance class.  We seriously have all of that and more!

The Brewery Artwalk

without comments

Ooh, and if you happen to be in Los Angeles, I’ve got another recommendation for you.

Back when I lived in Los Angeles I used to show my paintings, and sometimes some photographs as well, out of Theory Labs at these.  The only downside was not being able to explore all the other areas when I had to stay with mine.  Rarely do you ever get that much art into one area like that, and The Brewery is really an interesting exploration of it’s own right to begin with.  I can’t recommend this one enough.

Many of you reading may be familiar with the website streetanatomy.com.  It’s run by Vanessa Ruiz, a fellow alumni of UIC’s Biomedical Visualization program.  And she is putting together what looks to be an awesome show out in Chicago next month.

I think this one is going to be well worth checking out!

Nerd Nite in Austin

with 2 comments

Tonight I discovered Nerd Nite.  It was pretty sweet.

A friend of mine, Cynthia Phelps, gave the opening talk.  It was on “The Neuroscience of Logo Design.”  Her talk included a lot of information about emotional responses to color and symmetry the way we read shapes.  I’ve often struggled with the idea of committing to a logo.  As someone who tends to pull from a lot of different areas, and wears a lot of different hats, even in my freelance years I could never settle on a single image to represent it all.  Maybe tonight I will dream of something with Cynthia’s inspiration.  I don’t need it now as much, but it’s always good to have ideas like that filed away.

She was followed by Bruce Leander’s “Advanced techniques for digital fine art nature photography.”  Bruce got into the advantages of HDR (high dynamic range) photography, focus stacking, and panoramic images created from stitching images together virtually.  Really technology has come so far in being able to put images together like this.  It’s something I’d like to get into if I ever find the time.  As digital cameras get better and better, some of these techniques have become much more accessible to the non-specialist.  Bruce was actually a specialist though, and his work was beautiful.

And lastly Jason Neulander spoke on “How The Intergalactic Nemesis Started Taking Over the World.”  I was not familiar with The Intergalactic Nemesis before tonight, but it sounds fun and I hope to catch a showing sometime.  He’s basically writing comics/radio plays that are performed live with foley and music and projected art work.  I’d like to see it sometime.  And I really appreciated his talk about getting the show launched and his path as a creative.

Anyway, it was a fun night, a fun crowd, and interesting speakers and topics.  Apparently they do these nights in a lot of different cities.  Someone in Chicago is doing podcasts and recently interviewed an actual ninja, and there’s a magazine, and people posting videos of talks to Vimeo.  It’s a whole little world I never even knew about.  I have to admit, I’m a little tempted to try and give a presentation myself sometime.  I could talk about anaplastology, or educational media, or maybe talk about anatomy and art.  Could be worth doing if I were to manage to summon up the nerve and energy to put something interesting together.  And whether or not that ever happens, I’ll definitely be going back to more of these.

Burning Gallery

without comments

So last weekend (and the days surrounding) I took the first paid vacation of my life, and went to Flipside.  It was beautiful.  And I am again inspired to want to build awesome things.

I posted here sometime back about The Gallery of Dreams that my friend Nobo was putting together.  The idea was a gallery of artwork that would never be photographed, to be shown throughout the event, and set on fire at the end of it all to live on exclusively in our memories.  My own contributions to the gallery were small.  I painted a little bit on one of the walls.  But some of the contributions inside were amazing.

I have one photo that I can share of the final burn.  Anything closer would have revealed the art inside.  It was a good fire, and watching the pieces go inside is something that I think I will remember for a long time.
