Recently I finally finished a painting that I have been getting stuck with and coming back to again and again over years now. I’m really happy to finally see it finished.
Recent Works in Paint
My goodness, it looks like I haven’t updated here for a couple of paintings now. Well, just now, I finished the 2nd celebrity likeness I’ve ever done. There is a sad clown with a golden voice, named Puddles, who throws pity parties, and he’s wonderful. So before going to see him last week, I decided to make a tiny little painting of him and give it to him at the show. This one took me a few weeks I guess. I started with the basic lines, and then got to playing with it, and finally had to cut myself off so that I could give it to him. It was actually really refreshing making a gift this time. Sometimes I really like doing things like that.
And ultimately, I came out with this…
And then prior to that, I finally finished a piece that I had been working on for months. This one was called Forces. It is a bigger canvas, and I had to play with it a lot to get things right. I like how it ultimately turned out though.
Tree #11
I finally finished the new tree painting. This one has been a bit of a wish for fall as we get through the final slog of all this over 100º weather.
Prints Again
Picked up test strips of art prints today. I’ve been enjoying playing with changes in scale on prints, and I think I may try blowing another of my smaller pieces up.
Upcoming Art Show in Austin
It sounds like I’m going to be doing an art show this spring with Austin’s friendly neighborhood sex shop, Forbidden Fruit. I’m going to be bringing out a few of my older pieces for this one, especially if they let me display prints. I’ve been hoping to pull off something new too, though honestly it’s been a while since I’ve been in love or even lust for that matter with anyone and I’m not sure what to make. I’ve been a bit stuck in the making of new paintings lately, and one thing that’s nice about doing a show is that it gives you a concrete reason to push through a slump like that, or even if it doesn’t, it usually leaves you with new thoughts and feelings about your work afterwards that can often be channeled into new ideas. Either way, it’ll be good to get my work up again.
Swirled Up In Sheets
I have finally finished the new painting. This one is tiny, and it’s silly that it’s taken me so long to finish this, but it came out well in the end. I’m calling it “Swirled Up In Sheets”

Work of Late
Well it was nearly finished when I posted a draft before to test the new web hosting. But I finally settled on a final copy of that facial nerve illustration with my friend Ernest, so I thought I’d share that here.
I’ve been doing a lot of work with the skull again at work lately too. That’s all been based on the Zygote model mostly, defining which parts of the skull go with which individual skull bones and the like. That and chemistry, which is less relevant to this blog, but it’s been interesting to me just the same.
And at home, I’ve been working a lot on a painting lately. It’s funny, she started off so green, but I’ve been morphing the color palette over time.
This one is getting really close now and I hope to post the finished work soon. 🙂
November Show
Well, we wound up deciding not to show with EAST after some rigamarole about showing work in a bar setting as opposed to a working studio. But the show is on just the same, and we will be there throughout November starting on the 5th. Do come see us!
David Goodsell’s Process
David S. Goodsell talks about his process…
The video comes from his recent win at the 2016 Welcome Image Awards for his ebola painting.
Remembrance
I recently finished another painting. I’m calling it “Remembrance.”
This one took a long time and was perhaps the messiest picture I’ve gotten myself into yet. I did some new technique work with a sponge that turned out pretty well in the end.
I’m proud of this one. And I believe she already has a buyer off in Oregon, so I’ll only be keeping this one for a short while. That’s how some of them go. I’m going to make sure that I have a good image to work with for prints before sending her off though.
